Luke 14:1-14 (New King James Version)
Characters:
Jesus
Religious elite
Outcast
The sick man was 'used' as a tool to 'get to' Jesus. Even though he was a pawn in the hands of a bad group, it still benefited him.
News of Luke 13: 10-17 had gotten around. Now Jesus is in the home of a "Chief" Pharisee. He was 'watched' for the purpose of trapping Him, ensnaring Him. This sick man with the dropsy (retaining water, bloated) was 'unclean' and would have never been invited into the home of a Pharisee. This was another set-up situation like in Chapter 13.
Jesus then gives a lesson in humility. He is willing to help anybody. The Pharisees could not grasp that.
Here are some lessons for us to learn:
-God expects us to be humble people and reach out to outcasts, not isolate ourselves from them.
-Humility can be learned.
-Focus on others, not ourselves, verses 12,13,14.
